MICHAEL GODARD — “GRAPE CONFUSION”
AP 45/50 • Sold-Out Artist Proof • Giclée on Canvas
Apparently, getting into Heaven is a little harder when you’ve spent your life committing the Seven Deadly Zins.
Offered for sale is “Grape Confusion” by Michael Godard, a wonderfully twisted look at the eternal struggle between good and evil—or, in Godard’s world, between the grapes who made the guest list and the ones desperately trying to crash the party.
This example comes from the sold-out Artist Proof edition and is numbered AP 45/50, one of only 50 Artist Proofs produced.
THE STORY
At the Pearly Gates, the Heavenly Grapes have clearly decided there will be no last call and absolutely no uninvited guests.
Below, the “zinful” grapes have constructed a makeshift vine ladder in one final attempt to sneak into Heaven.
Unfortunately, Heaven has scissors.
The Heavenly Grapes are busy cutting the vine while guarding the gates, and the Seven Deadly Zins below are discovering that a lifetime of bad decisions may finally be catching up with them.
Then there’s Gluttony.
Apparently too heavy for the vine to support, he has already crashed back to earth and sits stunned among the flames—still clutching his chicken leg.
Priorities.
Meanwhile, Pride appears to have decided that the whole operation is beneath him and has left his fellow sinners to figure things out for themselves.
And just in case there was any question about who is winning, there’s a giant bottle waiting above the clouds.
Heaven, apparently, has a very good wine cellar.
As with so many of Michael Godard’s best works, the fun is in the details. The longer you look, the more characters, jokes, and little visual surprises you discover.

For a Michael Godard collector—or anyone who believes wine, Heaven, Hell, olives, grapes and questionable decisions belong together on one canvas—Grape Confusion is classic Godard.
It would be right at home in a wine room, bar, game room, entertainment area, or contemporary art collection.
And if anyone asks what it means, you can always tell them:
Good grapes go to Heaven. Bad grapes apparently bring a ladder.
