ABOUT “BOUDOIR”

Boudoir is a wonderful example of Barbara A. Wood's distinctive figurative style.

A reclining woman emerges from expressive passages of crimson, turquoise, blue, lavender, green and soft flesh tones. Rather than defining every detail, Barbara allows color, gesture and movement to create the figure and atmosphere.

The result is romantic, sensual and sophisticated, with just enough mystery left to the imagination.

It is unmistakably Barbara A. Wood—colorful, expressive and a little seductive without ever giving away the whole story.

ABOUT BARBARA A. WOOD

Barbara A. Wood was an American artist widely recognized for her expressive figurative paintings, particularly her portrayals of women. Born in Columbus, Ohio in 1926, she was raised primarily by her mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. These strong female influences would later play an important role in the women and relationships depicted throughout her artistic career.

Wood received a scholarship to study at the Traphagen School of Fashion in New York, where instructors recognized her artistic ability and encouraged her to pursue fine art. She later studied at the Art Students League of New York and continued her artistic education after moving to California.

Color became one of the defining elements of Wood's work. Her paintings are immediately recognizable for their vibrant palettes, energetic brushwork and loosely rendered figures. Rather than attempting to reproduce her subjects photographically, she used color and movement to convey personality, mood and emotion.

Wood once beautifully summarized her approach to painting with the words:

“Color is the music of painting.”

Throughout her long career, Barbara A. Wood's work was exhibited and collected internationally. Her paintings and limited editions found their way into numerous private collections, helping establish her as a highly recognizable contemporary figurative artist. She continued creating art throughout much of her life and passed away in 2023, just one day before her 97th birthday.
